gimme a break
I first heard this song earlier this afternoon, courtesy of a Reebok commercial. Heard it again about 15-20 minutes ago. Went online. Found it in about 30 seconds. Hunted on iTunes--found it and bought it. Then I found the lyrics. Then I found the chords.

ghod, I love the internets. I also love this song. Train Song by Vashti Bunyan. First released in May 1966.

So last night was my Ravinia night, a Chicago Symphony concert featuring violinist Joshua Bell. I didn't want to go.

Watched Bourne Supremacy last weekend. One of the things I love about it? The song that plays during the final credits, Extreme Ways by Moby.

Looked it up. it's on the CD "18." Which I've owned since it came out. Six years ago.

This has happened more than once.

"Boy, I really like that song."

Morrissey

Went with a friend to see Morrissey last night at the Genesee Theater in Waukegan. The opening act, Kristeen Young--I thought she was ok, although my friend thought she was trying to channel Bjork and made a hash of it.

After a half hour or so of that came an interesting film montage. A French pop singer. Brigitte Bardot singing something about bubble gum. James Dean and another actor doing clothing/photography tests for East of Eden--friend said that the other actor is on several of the Smiths' EP covers. Finally, a clip from an old Robert Stack/Elliot Ness episode in which the bad guys are out to kill a guy named Morrissey.

Then came the man himself, swinging right into "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before," followed by "Tomorrow," followed by a really good mix of Smiths/solo tunes. His band was really good, beautiful boys in matching white shirts/khakis. Much good music, played against a backdrop of images of a young Richard Burton.

I was a bit tired today.

Only a shade overdue

Peter
Six and half years ago (::boggles over the passage of time::), I went to see Peter Murphy at Metro. It was the Just for Love tour, very stripped down--just Peter, Peter diStefano on guitar, and Hugh Marsh on violin. Wonderful show. The CD pretty much captures it (altho Chicago wasn't treated to David J).

So yesterday, I was rooting around eBay, and found a tour t-shirt. Black. Long-sleeved. Now it's mine.

Only a little late.

As has been reported elsewhere, today is David Bowie's 60th birthday.

I've been a fan of his since he was 26.

Do you have any idea how terrifying this is?

The current 'play it over and over until I'm sick of it and don't listen to it again for two years' is "Dani California" by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. A poll behind the cut )

More music stuff

I usually listen to music while I write. Every once in a while I find any background noise distracting and need to work in silence, but 90% of the time, I'm listening to something.
There are times when I listen to a specific artist/band because they work well with a particular character--frex, Depeche Mode and Lucien work well together, as does Peter Murphy (solo work only) and John Shroud.

Other times, it's a mixed bag, with pop/electronica settling during shipping.

Stuff I listen to all the time behind the cut:

Too much stuff )
